External temperature sensor again.

Can anyone explain why these temperature sensors fail regularly? I know they are exposed to the elements and on coming air etc. in the front grill but I have never had this issue on any other car in 35 years of driving.

First replaced at 3.5 years old and now at 7.5 years old it seems it has gone haywire again as it is reading 6-8C below the ambient temperature.

I will be servicing the car next week, so I will unplug the sensor, clean up the contacts and see if that sorts it or whether I am shelling out another £30 for a new sensor. When I scanned the car it did show a voltage error on the sensor.
