Electronic parking brake issues

Post by Percy247 »

I had a quick search on here expecting to find tales of woe about the EPB but couldn't find anything unlike on other sites.

I have a owned a 67 plate GT Saloon for 7 years and the EPB has worked faultlessly for the last 55,000 miles. I have always left it set to Auto and that is where stays.

As I went to drive off yesterday the EPB was a lot more reluctant to release that usual. I gave the car a few more revs and then it released. On the return journey I had the same issue so I don't think it was the pads sticking to the discs.

I scanned the car with OBDeleven and got no brake related fault codes, so I conducted the EPB test and cycled it twice. I could clearly hear the pistons moving. This brought up two orange lights on the dashboard and a message similar to "parking brake error". I then cleared the code.

I then tested the EPB in both manual and Auto modes and it released normally.

So I don't know whether testing the EPB has reset it and solved the issue or there never was an issue and it was simply the pads sticking to the discs after not being driven for a few days.

Has anyone else had an issue with their EPB on these cars?

What are main issues that they suffer? Faulty caliper motor units, faulty switches or faulty control modules? Is there a diagnostic procedure to follow when dealing with EPB faults to pinpoint the cause of the problem?
