New VW owner 2012 1.6TDi Turbo replacement

Hey all, new around here, and well, new to VW full stop ! Long story short, beloved 208GTI died and sold it for a misery so to help out brother in law has given us his 2012 1.6tdi Bluemotion Passat estate but with a caveat, according to him the turbo needs replacing (currently car runs but with whistling noise).

Havent got the car yet but picking it up on Friday. Car has done about 95k miles. I have called a local garage for a ballpark figure of worst case scenario turbo indeed needs changing and the quote I got was £1700... £850 for the turbo itself (Garrett ?) and the rest for oil change, parts and labour. Does that sound reasonable at all ? I would have thought £1k was more in line with my expectations but I may be wrong ?

If it is indeed correct is it safe to look into a refurbed / reconditioned turbo ? Never had any experience with reconditioned ones so asking for honest opinion. Best places (online) anyone recommend from their own experience to get one from ?

Thanks for taking the time to read this and hopefully can get back on our feet after what has been a hard and expensive time with our old 208 GTI (loved the car but was full of issues and a bottomless pit money wise from the day we got it !)
