ERWIN is a great way to get up-to-date service manuals for your VAG car for little cost. It is provided by VAG as a service for 3rd party repairers to get access to all their manuals. Much more detailed than Haynes, though not as DIY oriented so doesn't cover makeshift tools etc.
The website is at https://erwin.volkswagen.de
You need to create an account and log in.
Once logged in; go to the "Individual Vehicle Information" -> "Repair Information" menu.
Select your vehicle, info medium (workshop manual, servicing guide, circuit diagrams) and Main group for workshop manuals: (note for B5.5 at least, many engines are filed under Power Transmission and not Drive Unit)
Once you have your selection complete, you will have a list of documents. Clicking on the "i" icon will usually open a PDF preview (table of contents). Clicking on the document title will either prompt you to buy some time, or if you have already bought time get you started downloading. 7euros will get you 1 hour of time, which if you've familiarized yourself with which documents you want to get, should allow you to download all the manuals for a couple of vehicle types.
