Dodgy Multi function steering wheel

Hi, any clues on what might cause a delay in my multifunction steering column controls working?

SYMPTOMS: on cold mornings or evenings the functions don't work for about 10-15 minutes. If I put the lights on the steering wheel lights remain off and no displays can be changed. Eventually after some driving time the lights will come on and the functions are accessible. Usually this happens when the inside has warmed up. It doesn't happen on evenings such as tonight when it was 17 degrees outside.

The car is a B7 S diesel Bluemotion auto model (2013) with cruise control fitted. It's got around 15 months of VW warranty left so does anyone think it might be covered? Or does anyone have a simple cause and solution or any thoughts/ideas? Is this is a common fault for example (although I've not seen it on any threads here or elsewhere)?
