Cam Chain Tensioner Engine Rattle

Post by meldean »

Hello

I have a X reg passat with 186k on the clock that has developed a rattle in startup for about 3 seconds. When it is hot as well it sometimes rattles when idling. If i put my foot down then the rattle goes.

The car was parked up for about 9 months and i then decided to revive the car and put back on road.

I have done alot of searching on the web regarding this which has lead me to believe its the cam chain tensioner, however people are also saying it could be oil pressure and also people are saying i can just replace the plastic guiders on the tensioner. So confusing. I have also been told to use thicker oil 10w 40w due to the cars high mileage and age but not sure about that.

What i need is this forums expertise. Can someone point me in the right direction as to what i need to do. Replace tensioner. Replace guides. I am going to drop the oil and replace with fresh oil to see if that helps.

Also what parts will i need for this procedure.

Any help would be very appreciated
