Hard brake pedal, loss of braking

Hey folks,

I must have drove around last night, from Glasgow, Stirling, Falkirk and back and it was quite the speedy stop and starting type of drive. I suddenly lost all braking going down a country road and had to slow using gears and the handbrake.

The brake pedal went down about 3-6cm then stopped hard with no feeling of the car slowing. I managed to stop, and get out to check the brake pipes, calipers, and checked the pipes coming out of the booster with no sign of leaks or cracks.

I sat for about 30 mins and all was well, however, i'm really worried that it might happen again, and wonder what could have caused it.
