Cooling Fault - Urgent Help Needed!

Post by Alun »

Hi all, had a brief look around but can't find anything that will help me, the fault is as follows;

The car is a '99 Passat 1.8 Turbo

When driving, the engine temperature will slowly rise until it gets near the red mark until the onboard computer flashes saying "STOP, CHECK COOLANT LEVEL". I've checked the coolant level, topped up and kept my eye on it. There is no visible leak and the level is staying the same.

Under normal driving, when the temperature needle rises above 90 deg', if the car is stationary and left to idle, the temp will slowly go back down to 90. If I turn the climatronic up to max (so I'm sweating my sack off!) it seems to help by drawing warm air away from the engine. The temp' will start to rise past 90 in the space of 5 minutes of driving.

The top hoses from the header tank are warm as usual, not bulging or anything.

With the ignition on and the temp' guage near the red, the fan doesn't seem to be kicking in.

Whats the problem?

Is it likely to be something like a faulty fan switch? If so where is this located so I can replace it?

Is it likely to be a thermostat?

Possible Temp' switch fault?

Help someone as I need to get the car fixed for saturday night!!!

I've tried to be as detailed as I can!

Thanks in advance :D
