Front Clunk

Post by Tropheus »

Hi all,

I have a 2013 CC 2.0 TDi 140 bhp with 120k miles. I've owned it for the past 18 months. I'm hearing a clunk when the weather gets colder - below 10c. It lasts for about 10 mins after start up and then pretty much goes away. It happens when I change gear - press the clutch and release the torque from the gearboxh, accellerating, and going over bumps. It seems to be from the mid-front-driver's side.

I had a look at the suspension and there is nothing obvious. I had a mechanic look at it. He sugested the drop links to start with (no joy) and then possibly the shocks and top mounts as they looked original (done, but with no joy). I then did both the top engine mount and gearbox mount (under the air box) - again, no difference .

I also read about the dogleg bushing in the front subframe. The bottom looks fine and there is certainly no play in the bolt or with the dogleg itself. I installed Powerflex insert as a cheap way of eliminating it (again, nada).

Has anyone else experienced similar? The temperature bit has me stumped. It has probably got a little bit worse over time in that it takes a bit longer to go and is faintly there on very cold days.

I have read about the subframe moving and clunking and have seen collars available. Has anyone had this issue?

I suppose it could possibly be the top dogleg bushing in the subframe, but I would have though that the insert would at least improve it.

Any pointers would be much appreciated.
