J764 error

Hello

This week on Tuesday my Passat broke down just as I pulled out of our close. I called the AA and they found a J764 error which requires the control unit for the steering wheel column to be replaced.

Has anyone else had this please? The car has run fine for the last three days. I had a USB charger in the 12volt charger at the time and I am wondering if that triggered the fault.
