B6 - double DIN to single DIN

It might seem a little retrograde, but single DIN stereos are significantly cheaper than the fancy double DIN units.

Is there a cubby that can be installed to replace the second DIN so a single DIN stereo can be fitted? how non-standard is the VW aperture for the double DIN in the B6 - it looks quite 'shaped'.

I did search, but failed to find anything useful on this.
