Depress Clutch

Hi
Passat diesel 1.6 Bluemotion
Got stuck at my local garage yesterday luckily with "Depress Clutch" message when starting the car and its not starting
Clutch cylinder has been tested by the garage and all is fine (new one plugged in but error remains)
This previously happened to me months ago and I just swapped over the keys and it fired but I'm at a loss as to why as the key don't do anything electronically?
Anyway, what else might it be?
