Rear Reading Lights

Hi
Looking at the above, between the 2 round 'Reading-Lights' there is a frosted panel (all part of the fitment) that seems to have a hole in it but no bulb..........leastways not that I can see compared to the R-L.
Nothing in the Owners manual regarding this - a friend when changing his (Golf) R-L (same fitment/layout) to led's popped a bulb into this socket but didnt work...
So what is this central socket for that will take a bulb but doesnt work please?
