Uneven tyre wear on rears

I’ve just had a set of new alloys fitted and retired the factory ones for summer however whilst I was cleaning them up for storage I noticed that the outer edge of both rear tyres were worn a couple of mm more than the inner edge.
The wear appears smooth and there’s no sign of saw toothing.
Having had a 4 wheel alignment carried out in line with the new set of wheels/tyres the tyre guy recommended going to VW to have a look and gave me the obligatory warning “it’ll cost”
The result of the 4 wheel alignment was that it was almost perfect already (out by 0.5mm) so nothing adjusted
Has anybody else had this problem and/or found the cause and fix?
