Rough Ride

Hi all, just got a 170 Sport DSG estate, do a lot of miles often towing. Great car except for one thing a very harsh ride ( wasn't able to try before - lack of demos etc). When I got the car the tyres where set at 40 psi, one pound over the 39 target - 235/45/17. Lowering the pressure to 37 made a huge improvement. Has anyone tried to go lower? and how do you get round the monitor system? My last car was a Jag X type Sport it had 40 series 18inch tyres and only 32 psi pressures, and a pretty good ride. My back really needs help Any clues to improving the ride quality much appreciated, VW no help at all - 'its the way a sport is sir' pity its the only way you can have the 170 engine HELP PLEASE.
