2012 Estate Tailgate opening switch

Hi Guys;
Belive this was discussed sometime ago by another person, but never got a definitive answer.
Can anyone explain the purpose of the switch on the drivers door to open the tailgate/boot?
If I am sitting in the car and my wife wishes to put some shopping in......then the tailgate is opened on the outside, furthermore if I do pull the switch it doesnt actually open the tailgate as such.
If the car is unlocked and I want to be in the boot...........then same thing happens!
If the car IS locked then pressing the remote [a] normal unlock OR tailgate unlock..........opens the tailgate.
So again, what is the purpose of this inside switch?, unless of course I am missing something!!
