Timing belt change on 1999 1.9tdi

Hello all. We have a RHD Passat Wagon 110BHP 1.9tdi. It's overdue a timing belt change but we live in a very rural part of France with few garages. Limoges our nearest city is about 60km away. There is a decent Bosch diesel specialist garage there but they want around €750 for the job.
What should we be paying for this job? I gather we need a new belt and a new water pump. We really can't afford paying out €750 on a 25 year old car.
How risky is it to leave it? The current belt looks in good condition. Secondhand cars cost a packet here also, and to be fair it's been a great car. It's just money is extremely tight and €750 is a lot of dosh!
Thoughts?
