Lost all drive and gears

Currently waiting for recovery on M25. 3 hours and counting so far..... 
Anyway, whilst I suspect that this 175k 1.9 tdi may be for the scrapyard, I was wondering(hoping?) if it could be something more simple.
Driving along and suddenly realised I was coasting. Couldn't select any gears. Engine still running and revving fine but no gears.
History: It had been slipping from 4th into neutral for a while so I had just been missing it out. It also clunks into 1st but has done that for years.
Any thoughts?
