Does Engine Code confirm exact Clutch?

I am about to buy a clutch kit and wondering if, when the clutch is listed as suitable for an ALT engine code, it is definitely suitable for my car which is an ALT?
Sorry if this sounds daft I am not an expert. And I do know that you generally give the number plate to get an answer from the supplier.
