multi function display trouble

hi guys, my red display that shows temp and mpg often glows bright red and sometimes goes out completely? but now i cant change it from the number 2 setting back to the number 1 setting by pressing the reset button? could this be the button on the wiper stalk or do you think this is an issue with the whole dash unit itself? do any of you have any experience with this type of thing?
