What tool for inner CV joint bolts

I am about to take off the near side drive shaft to replace a damaged rubber boot, but I see there are 6off bolts holding the inner CV joint to the transmission. The Haynes manual mentions a splined socket although I do not know what size. 
I have seen on the web that I should not use TORX tools (which I have !) So does anyone know the details for my 1991 B3 1.8 petrol manual gearbox Passat?
