Paint and Interior Protection

When l ordered a new car last week the dealer tried to sell me exterior paint protector and interior protector for the carpets and seats. Around £300.
Most folk say this is a rip off and it's cheaper and better to do it yourself.
I've not done this before. What products do people use to protect their car inside and out please ?
