How do i fit CD in dash?

Got a B5 with Climatronic. Radio tape player and a cubby hole at the bottom. Bought a VW CD player on fleabay thinking it would slot in where the cubby is......not the case as it seems to small for the CD. Anyone tell me the right way to do this job?
