Catalytic Converter?

Hi folks,

I have a 5.5 TDi estate with a clattering exhaust which a local VW specialist diagnosed as a bust cat. VW replacement costs £400 (ouch) and the mechanic reckoned a third party part would make the car noisier than it already is.

Anyone with any experience of replacing CAts out there??
