Head unit not working

Hi guys, I'm new here so go easy, but hope to become more involved once I make my purchase. I'm looking to buy a 20115 passat estate 2.0 TDI BlueMotion Tech SE Business, but have just now been told by the seller that the head unit is not working.
Had anyone had any experience with this issue? common problem perhaps??
Is it a cheap fix or expensive replacement?
I done a quick google search and some say units can cost around £1200. wtf?
