Rebuilt Engine
So the time has come to part with my Passat after 17 years of ownership and 300 000 miles of service. I was planning to keep it but I am not up to being a mechanic any more as I'm knocking on 60. I put a new engine in it myself 8 years ago and rebuilt the old engine with a view to another exchange a...

Re: Water in boot lid
Ok, sorted this 100%. Turns out that the seal although only a couple of years old was not quite sealing the boot lid and when driving water was getting in where the boot meets the back windsreen and filling the lid. Every time it opens water pours out. To fix this I got 4 metres of 3mm inside diamet...

Re: Water in boot lid
No, saloon. Ive checked the seal- ok, lots of sycamore seeds and leaves where water runs out at bottom of boot so have cleared the worst, see what happens. I might remove rear bumper and clean it out

Water in boot lid
Hey y'all, my boot lid is full of water, when opened it drips out onto the floor of the boot. Every time I shut it it opens itself again. Cannot work out how water is getting in it. Any ideas?

Re: Cam shaft replacement - hydraulic lifters
I've stripped and cleaned tappits and the only safe way to install them is to put 1/2" engine oil in a pan, add the lifters (right way up) and heat till the oil starts to bubble. As the lifters expand and rise they draw oil in. Leave overnight to cool, hey presto you have pre charged lifters th...

Re: Control arms
Yes I tightened them while the car was on ramps so can't understand them failing, mind you I got them off E Bay so maybe they were copies, as there are a lot on there.

Control arms
Hi all, MOT due so did a few checks and was a bit dismayed to find several control arms near failure. I changed the lot 3 years ago and used Meyle HD hoping that they would last longer than generic ones I used before, but they have not. Has anyone tried cheap/vs HD? I am loath to spend more to get t...

Re: TIMING BELT KIT
I used a Gates kit and was impressed- for 2 weeks until I noticed coolant leaking out. Checked and couldn't find a leak so left it. Then it got colder and the leak came back, got worse, so took off the cambelt cover and saw it is the water pump itself leaking, not the O ring. Seems there is a metal ...

Re: Airbag module removal.
Well after many days with a furrowed brow I took a gamble and bought an ecu from another passat, managed to remove the old one, bolted in the new one, plugged it in expecting code errors etc but it worked straight away- no faults, no codes. Was thinking about scrapping the car as MOT is due but now ...

Re: Crank breather
Got mine from VW for £28 mate. To change it you have to remove the vacuum tank from under the intake manifold (2 screws) to gain access to the clip holding it in, but be careful when pulling it out as the housing is cast and liable to break. Make sure you get a new O ring too. Good luck.

Re: Airbag module removal.
Ok, tried the scanner 3 times, no good. Seems like I'm going to have to try and get the ECU out and maybe try another module- got 2 months till mot due but not convinced I can fix this. Had it with this car, suffered water ingress that ko'd the comfort module, the engine ecu gave up and had to repla...

Re: 195k 2.0 20v ALT with intermittent starting issue.
Change the crank position sensor. Had it with my car, wouldn't start when hot, ended up dying occasionally when driving. Its a magnetic sensor that loses magnetism over time and also when hot, so when it stops working properly and the ecu cant work out how far round the crank is and thus the firing ...

Re: Crankcase breather hose ?
The repair may last but I'd get it replaced as soon as possible as you may experience misfiring/ stuttering/ stall due to lack of positive crankcase ventilation. It is a oh fiddlesticks! to replace, if you are going to do it yourself then it is advisable to remove the alternator to give you room eno...

It's either plug for knock sensor or lambda probe- if you look under and behind the coolant tank on the firewall there is a plug clip that should have the corresponding colour female to plug into

Advice needed Fuel Pump replacement
Hi, my fuel pump died on me ('02 passat 2.0 petrol) so ordered a new one and the leaflet says that the tank must be fully cleaned out prior to fitting. Is this necessary? I've changed one before and not done a tank clean but it wasn't a new pump although it lasted 8 years. Any help greatly appreciat...
