I would start with cleaning. But forget all these "spray in intake" cleaners. Only correct way in my opinion is removing and cleaning. After cleaning if it works - happy days. If you blank it, you must remap it, otherwise you will have warning lights on dashboard. But even if you go that ...

Finally got it apart, but doesn't look too bad (see photo), so I'm thinking this may not be the root of my problem....obviously cleaning anyway. Any other cleaning to do while this is apart? I'm a bit confused as the recycled exhaust seems to be entering after the valve I've removed...? I warned you...
