After charging it let it stand for an hour and then check the voltage.
A full battery should how 12.6v or even more.
Plenty of info on the net about the state of charge voltages and stuff.

Battery is dead well as good as at that standing voltage time for a new one i think.
A charger on a healthy but low battery should show around 14v mine does.

As long as the rest is timed correctly i don't think it will harm to try it.
