Re: Emergency plastic key

It does. Mind you I suppose little point if it didn't. Clever Germans - a light, third key that you can keep in your wallet without the bulk of a fob.

Emergency plastic key

My 1999 1.8 B5 came to me with the whole package present from new - two keys and fobs, codes, etc It also came with a plastic "emergency" key. My question is - does this contain a transponder? I assumed that all VWs of this age do but the emergency key is very slim with just a bulge at the...

Spark plugs

Still tinkering with my newly aquired 1999 1.8 Passat and thought I'd check the spark plugs after replacing the pollen filter. What surprised me was just how tight the plugs were in - The pressure that I was having to apply to undo them was huge. After the initial crack, it still took quite some tor...

Re: Seized locking nut problem

Took the car to a local tyre place who used a locking nut remover. The big guy had trouble taking it off as itd had been over tighten. Changed them to normal nuts and CV boot changed. Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk I sympathise with this thread as my last car before the Passat was an X Type. ...

Re: Fan not working

**Update** my brushes arrived (£4.49 from eBay) and I have fitted them. The difference in length between these and the original ones was dramatic. Before soldering in the new brushes I cleaned out the commutator and armature windings of carbon dust and it now works well. I expect this set will see t...

Re: Fan not working

***Update*** - I removed the blower motor and removed the motor from its housing - the commutator is badly worn and the brushes are nearly gone. I cleaned the commutator with very fine emery cloth and refitted the brushes. The fan motor works better now but it'll be temporary and I think that the br...

Thanks. My car has the electronic climate control with the LCD screen and the fan speed is selected by pressing up/down buttons (Climatronic?) would you still go for a duff motor?

Jultsu wrote: Wed Aug 02, 2017 6:54 pm Sounds like a dying fan to me. You might be able to salvage it by taking it apart completely and cleaning the brushes and carbon pads.

Fan not working

I got into my 1999 1.8 B5 and started a journey. The problem was that the heater/cooler fan simply would not start and blow any air - if I selected ECON/AUTO I could hear the compressor kicking in/out but increasing / decreasing the fan speed resulted in no air flow. Then after about 10 minutes the ...

Re: Dash display

So you have a half-FIS or a full-FIS display? And by "dark" you mean there is no output, no text no graphics, but does the background still illuminate? Half FIS as the top half is black plastic and the backlight always appears but there are no characters displayed. The warning beep always...

Dash display

The orange/red LCD display in the centre of my B5 1.8 1999 dash does not always come on. It usually pings and reports "service now" and displays auto gear and MPG etc - very useful but sometimes I get the ping but the display simply remains dark - any ideas? If I switch off/on it invariabl...

Newbie oil enquiry

Hi, I'm new to Passats and just bought a 1.8 petrol auto with 187k on it. The oil looks very clean but the last service stamp is three years ago and it's done 20k since then. Just to be sure I want to change the oil and filter but don't want to splash out a fortune on fancy oil for such an old car. ...

187,309 - B5 1.8 Auto.

**Second highest for this model on here so it seems after Tweeqd** - time for a 3k road trip to catch up. Still modest compared to the diesels though.

Re: What did you do to your Passat today?

I bought it! My first Passat - a B5 1999 1.8 auto in green with climate control and over 180,000 miles. First job - to remove that ugly towbar. BTW the rear arches are a bit rusty on the forward edges but that seems normal...

Power steering fluid

The steering mineral oil reservoir on my newly-bought 1999 1.8 Passat is low - can I use LHM Plus mineral oil in there. The present oil looks to be green.

Hello everyone

I have bought my first VW Passat and am very pleased with it. It didn't cost much, is green, Automatic and has a 1.8 20v engine. It was registered in 1999 and has completed over 180,000 miles. Normally I would not have bothered at that sort of mileage but it has a full service history and all of the...
