Re: Renegaderacer - B5.5 1.8T Sport Estate
I think I'm pretty much resigned to getting a live remap done now. Unfortunately live mappers seem pretty thin on the ground down south. There's a place not far from me called Austec Racing who claim to do live mapping but I've heard mixed reviews about them. The only other one I know about is Motor...

Re: Renegaderacer - B5.5 1.8T Sport Estate
Yeh, I'm beginning to see they use a careful choice of wording when they advertise their maps. They were working on the car all day but that was only because they couldn't get it to boost properly due to the damaged actuator and a split in the vacuum hose from the d/v to the inlet manifold. I got th...

Re: Renegaderacer - B5.5 1.8T Sport Estate
Hmm, that's interesting. I think mine was mapped through the odb port. Maybe that's the problem? Annoying if that's the case as that would be £550 down the drain! I'll try changing the bits I mentioned to see if that makes a difference nd then I'll have to admit defeat and get another remap.

Re: Renegaderacer - B5.5 1.8T Sport Estate
Quick update on the power problem. Changed the turbo over to my old K03 last week as I wanted to get my K04 checked over and possibly rebuilt but due to the bank holiday I had to wait until today. Well, as it turns out, there's nothing wrong with the turbo. That's good and bad. Good that it saves me...

Re: Newbie
Oh, I nearly forgot. With the kind of torque you'll be producing you'll more than likely need to fit an uprated clutch and flywheel just to add a bit more to the bill!

Re: Newbie
No problem mate; glad I could offer some advice. I've done all the mods mentioned so I know how much time and money it takes to get decent power out of these. It was a LOT easier to get power out of my old Scooby! Sounds like you've got a really good deal on your car and you're in a great position h...

Re: Newbie
200bhp - reasonably cheap to achieve. 230+bhp - starts getting very expensive! For 230bhp you will need a new turbo, the most common being the K04-015. If you want it to last, get a real one rather than an eBay special. Unfortunately, that won't be cheap. You don't need the exhaust manifold for 230b...

Re: Newbie
I had a K&N on my car but you have to be careful not to over oil it as it will screw the maf up. If you can get a free-flow filter that doesn't require oil, that would be perfect. I believe Pipercross are the preferred ones. As far as other mods are concerned; how far do you want to go? Exhaust,...

Re: Newbie
Hi mate,
If you want more performance on a budget, the best thing you can do is give your car a good service, fit a free flowing panel filter and get a decent remap. Should get you up to around 190bhp on a fit engine. ;)

Thanks for that, you've given me a bit more confidence to give it a go myself. I'll try it this weekend if I get time. Could really do with saving myself a few hours of labour at a garage at the moment! ;)

How Hard Is It To Change A Turbo On A 1.8T?
I'm going to get my K04 rebuilt in a bid to find my lost power and would like to save some money and remove it myself. I've got my old K03 I can fit in the mean time (I obviously won't be thrashing it as the car's mapped for a larger turbo). It looks fairly simple but is there anything I have to loo...

Re: Only 210bhp! - Where Have My Ponies Gone? :-(
From the graph it seems to be making full power quite early too, somewhere between 4500-500 rpm. What are the AFR's? If it's running rich that won't be helping things. The AFR's would help rule out alot of suggestions . The shapes of the graphs look fine , quite an advantage to make bhp early befor...

Re: Only 210bhp! - Where Have My Ponies Gone? :-(
I think the wastegete's ok as we fitted a Forge actuator and tested it opened and stayed shut when it should. I'll change the d/v for another one when I get the money. In the mean time I can blank off the trumpet to make it completely recirculating.

Re: Only 210bhp! - Where Have My Ponies Gone? :-(
I'm quickly realising what a pain in the butt these can be to tune! I like to cover all possibilities so I'll change the thermostat and change the sensor now but I'll have to wait a couple of weeks for pay day before I do anything else. I'll probably get the turbo rebuilt then and after that I'll ge...

had the same problem with my 1.8T a while a go, low on power, would still get full boost, turbo running too hot problem was blocked cat, did think of getting a sports cat but decided in the end to just gut the cat, power is now back up to 245bhp It's good to hear that someone's had the same problem...

Re: Only 210bhp! - Where Have My Ponies Gone? :-(
Scanned the car and it only came up with one code, P1296 which will be either an engine temperature sensor or a new thermostat. Easy enough fix but don't think that would cause the turbo to overheat.

Re: Only 210bhp! - Where Have My Ponies Gone? :-(
Just had a look at my sports cat and it looks like I'll have to get Longlife to make a decat as the cat they made includes the downpipe and flexi so an off the shelf unit won't fit!

Hmm, I hadn't thought about a sensor. I'll plug my code reader in and see if anything comes up. Still might get the injectors cleaned as well.

Cheers guys. Good to see they are all around the same price and it's pretty affordable (compared to a new turbo anyway!). Not sure if I want to wait 8 months to get my turbo back though! ;)

Best Place To Get A Turbo Rebuilt?
Hi guys, I've replaced everything on my 1.8T aside from the turbo to try and get my power back so I'm only left with the option of rebuilding the turbo. I've heard there are a lot of cowboys out there so can anyone recommend any good companies and what kind of price will I be looking at? I know you ...

Yeh, I'm going to bite the bullet and get the turbo rebuilt. I'll probably find out how much Longlife will want to fit a custom decat too as it can't hurt! ;)

Re: Only 210bhp! - Where Have My Ponies Gone? :-(
I got the turbo off a member in here that was apparently rebuilt by Universal Turbos. I'm leaning towards the turbo being damaged now as it is overheating and losing oil. I checked the oil pipes today and made sure the tip was attached properly and everything looked good and as you say, I have a ver...
