Quick update, did exactly as recommended, got the rear callipers cleaned up and it sailed through it's MOT, no need to mess about with the EPB motors, which was a result. Thanks for all the help guys.

Thanks Mitch, I was wondering what the implications would be of taking the motors off the calipers and giving the spindles a twist. As I don't have VCDS or vagcom, if I just de-activated the parking brake, took the motors off, did a 1/4 turn and then put them back on would that cause an issue?
