Re: HELP!! Diesel leak??

Hello again. I think the pump must be leaking from the top seal. Also the timing belt is due for change. I think it would be best to buy a refurbed pump and replace the pump and the timing belt at the same time. Saves messing about with seals and I don't think a garage here would take on that sort o...

Re: HELP!! Diesel leak??

Don't worry about that, it don't happen that suddenly. Pipes will be okay Are you sure? Don't want to lose all my coolant! I think the pump may have been leaking for a few months. We haven't been out much due to lockdown! Regarding your suggestion for brake cleaner and trying to trace the leak, the...

Re: HELP!! Diesel leak??

That looks to me like the pump head seals, rebuild kit is around £15 in uk and it's just the top 2 rectangular seals needed for that. Not really a DIY job tbh as if you put the head back on wrong or possibly damage something while removing/replacing etc Sent from my SM-A505FN using Tapatalk I don't...

Re: HELP!! Diesel leak??

Don't worry about it, diesel isn't that flammable, and exhaust is on other side. Don't put rag or anything else, jus let it drip down aside the engine, it won't catch on fire. Some people are driving like this for years, so you will be fine. I'm not really that worried about it dripping onto the un...

Re: HELP!! Diesel leak??

We can't get the car fixed straight away because of lockdown but we still need to us it. Would it be okay to stuff a big rag between the engine block and the pump to catch any drips or is this too much of a risk? Is it likely to get too hot and combust?

Re: HELP!! Diesel leak??

I have watched a few youtube videos on this. I have run the engine and I can't actually see any fuel leaking with the car stationary? What is weird is where it is accumulating? If it is not leaking from the top plate seal then how is diesel getting into that small hollow in the casting? (see third p...

Re: HELP!! Diesel leak??

So it's probably a mare of a job then?! Don't fancy doing it myself and there are no VW specialists anywhere near us. Closest is about 150 km away. That's interesting about the veg oil. I have read online on another forum that using bio diesel for a tank load can cause the seals to swell up again an...

HELP!! Diesel leak??

For the past few weeks I have been noticing a diesel smell coming from the engine bay (not inside the car, but when parked up you can smell diesel). Our car is a 1999 B5 1.9tdi 110 BHP Wagon. Only mod is a Blacksmoke chipped ECU upping the power to about 130BHP I have had the plastic engine cover of...

Slight coolant leak from top radiator hose?

Hi Folks. I have a slight coolant leak on our 1998 Passat B5 wagon 1.9 tdi. I have traced the leak to the top radiator coolant hose. It is a quick connector type with the push in clip. Seems a rubbish design to me..what's wrong with a jubilee clip? Can this be modified? I believe there is a rubber w...

Hi. Thanks for the reply. I will check the O ring to see if it has perished. Any idea where I would get a replacement? I'm on lockdown in rural France!!

Leak from top radiator hose?

We have a 1999 1.9 tdi 110 BHP AFN Wagon. I was checking the oil the other day and noticed that the cold coolant level was low. Had a look around the engine bay for tell tale pink coolant staining and noticed a bit of wetness below the top radiator hose. I gave the hose a wiggle where it joins the r...

Re: Air con problems?

Cut the belt from above. Was a tight squeeze but cut and removed and the noise has disappeared. I turned the compressor pulley by hand and it sounds and feels really rough. Would people recommend paying for a new pattern compressor or risk a genuine s/h one? We don't need to replace it until the spr...

Sometimes I don't handle stupidity very well. Sorry, not sorry :hyst So All I need to do is remove the undertray and cut the belt from below? I just wanted to be certain? So I don' t need to do anything to the tensioner? If we lose the car due to me messing something up then we are completely stran...

Re: Air con problems?

I do not own a Passat, nor anything with Dr Diesel's evil invention under the bonnet, so I have no practical experience upon which I can draw. That said, there are many professors here with great knowledge of such things. Here are a couple of diagrams of the belt and its tensioner (belt path marked...

Sometimes I don't handle stupidity very well. Sorry, not sorry :hyst Is there any need to be rude? Seriously? I see you are located in Hull. Re: Air con problems?

Have a look at the belt that drives the compressor. If it drives only the compressor as seems likely from the above, then you can remove it by relieving the force from its tensioner and removing the belt, (you may have to also remove the tensioner if you are to use the car without the drive belt in...

Ordering control arms for 1999 B5 Passat?

I need to order a set of lower suspension control arms for our 1999 VW Passat 1.9 tdi 110 BHP AFN. I was told that there are two types of balljoint size. As I am in France I was going to order from a website called Autodoc as recommended to me by Mini Mental. There is an overwhelming choice of makes...

Re: Air con problems?

Thanks for the replies. The aircon has been faulty for some time, no doubt due to a knackered compressor. We are not too worried about that for the moment as we are going into autumn and winter so it is not needed. I am certain the grinding/scraping noise is coming from the compressor. Can I just re...

Re: Air con problems?

It’s most likely the air con belt tensioner that’s failing. Usually around £20 they can be had for. I got a Meyle tensioner and belt for £22 on eBay when mine went. Is this a diy job, I'm useless when it comes to this stuff as this is our first car that has had aircon? Is the access okay? Guess the...

Re: Air con problems?

Thanks for the replies, It's all so confusing all made more difficult by living in France and deep rural France at that. Air con problems?

The air con hasn't worked for a while on our 1999 Passat tdi Wagon. Just recently I think the air con compressor has started to make a noise when the engine is running. I think it may be the bearing in the compressor? It is quite noisy. We had the air con checked last year after getting it regassed ...

Need new lower front control arms? Which brand?

I need to replace the lower front control arms on our 1999 Passat 1.9Tdi Wagon. There are a whole load of different priced ones on ebay. Which brands would you recommend and I would need the parts shipped to France. Meyle HD seem to be the priciest? Are Topran ones okay?

Re: B5 Passat woes..get rid or stick with?

Brilliant post Mini Mental. Yes it has been a great car, it's just the problems mounting up that have made me question ploughing more money into it. Regarding the split hose, it is this one:- https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Turbocharger-Intake-Intercooler-Hose-VW-Audi-Seat-PASSAT-A4-GOLF-III-3-A6/1133300...
