Steel Seal - Good or bad
Has any one got any experience of using a product called Steel Seal. I am losing some coolant out through the exhaust, but my cylinder pressures appear well within specification. If so and they were good, did you take any special precautions when using Steel Seal If they were bad, what was the reaso...

Re: White smoke from exhaust
Now we have had dry weather for a few days, I have changed the thermostat, the old one had some 'gum' on it! The gauge certainly shows signs of warming a lot earlier but I still have white smoke/steam (I now think the latter) from the exhaust when engine warms a little. I also notice that the coolan...

Re: White smoke from exhaust
It's funny that when I start from cold, there is no 'smoke/steam', but a couple of minutes later the discharge appears. Incidentally, I changed the oil and filter yesterday (annual exercise!) but when I checked the coolant level this morning, it had gone down a little!!! Looking at the discharge, I'...

Re: White smoke from exhaust
No, it doesn't smell but looks like steam, although I am using more fuel lately. Not sure where the temperature sender is located on my RP engine. Is it the one colour coded black located on a coolant outlet elbow on the left hand side of the cylinder head, which I believe sends a signal to the gaug...

Re: White smoke from exhaust
Many thanks for your replies. Looks like I need to a new thermostat and Coolant temp sender for the slow 'heat up' of coolant. However, has all this anything to do with the white smoke, maybe it's the cause?

White smoke from exhaust
I have an old 1991 Passat estate that has started to produce white smoke particularly after the engine has warmed up, although I generally only use it for short journeys to take the dogs for walks. The smoke doesn't smell and I am not losing any coolant water. Top and bottom hoses to the radiator ge...

Re: Rear shock absorber replacement
Well it finally stopped raining so tried my luck today. Boy Oh Boy, was that guide trim above the seat belt mounting TIGHT ! After a lot of cursing (you may have heard me) I finally managed to remove it using screwdrivers as levers, but thanks for letting me know it wasn't held by screws. I was a li...

Re: Rear shock absorber replacement
Thanks for the advice. I'll give it another go, hopefully today (if it doesn't rain!). I'll let you know the outcome.

Rear shock absorber replacement
I need to replace the rear shock absorber on my 1991 Passat Estate. I have 2 different Haynes Manuals but neither are very good at explaining how to remove the plastic trim to expose the strut top mount. One manual even had pictures to show fixings etc but mine were different ! Has any one an idea h...

Re: 1991 Cylinder head bolts
Looks like I'll be buying a new tool ! 'Ta' much any way, better to have the right tool to start with, although I might take it back to the garage that did the head gasket to deal with.

Re: 1991 Cylinder head bolts
Thanks mate but I forgot to add that I had the head gasket replaced over 18 months ago when they also skimmed the head, and presumably changed the head bolts. So I'm not sure if replacement bolts would be any different (?)

1991 Cylinder head bolts
Does any one know the correct size of tool for replacing cylinder head bolts on my 1991 1.8 Petrol engine Passat. I have a Draper TX-STAR Bit Set with sizes T20, T25, T30, T40, T50 all 30mmm long and a T55 75mm long. Will that be OK ?

Re: Clutch pedal stays down (Hydraulic) 1991 Passat Esate
No it was the other way round ie, the old one had studs and the replacement had holes. However, it seems to be OK still.

Re: Clutch pedal stays down (Hydraulic) 1991 Passat Esate
Decided to buy a replacement master cylinder (made by Brake Engineering through Wanapart) and finally fitted it when the weather was a bit warmer. The only problem I had was when I removed the old one, it had threaded studs for its mounting with nuts on the inside by the clutch pedal. The new one si...

Re: Clutch pedal stays down (Hydraulic) 1991 Passat Esate
Whoops, maybe I should have used silicone grease instead. I'll try that just in case it does help. Anyway, thanks for the advice but any other ideas if that doesn't work particularly a source for replacement.

Clutch pedal stays down (Hydraulic) 1991 Passat Esate
On occasions, my clutch pedal stays down and I have to pull it back by hand when it then works OK for a while until the next time. I suspected the slave cylinder and changed that as it looked knackered. Things improved for a while but the frequency is gradually getting more frequent. I have even put...

Steel Seal
Whilst I had the cylinder head gasket replaced a year ago along with having the head skimmed, I now have milky deposit in the head cover and water loss has increased. As the work was undertaken 12 months ago, I am considering using a product called Steel Seal, and would appreciate any feedback, good...

Inefficent heater
The heater of my 1741cc petrol 1991 Passat has never worked well. I have checked the heater matrix and it isn't blocked. I notice there are components on each of the two pipes to the heater in the engine compartment that appear to be non-return valves (?) with a bypass link between the two, but one ...
