Exhaust Smoke and Reduced Consumption

Folks, I have a 2.0 140 workhorse and over the last few months there is an increase of smoke out the exhaust, and a significant drop in consumption- anything from 400-500 miles per tank.
Strangely it’s not consistent, when on a longer run the computer can show up to 1000mikes remaining in a tank.
Is there anything obvious that could be causing it to behave in this manner?!
