Changing rear shocks advice needed

I'm planning on changing the rear shocks on my B5.5 Estate myself 
So a couple of questions please.
Firstly will I be able to do it without a vice to hold the housing while I undo the top nuts?
And second can you please advise on the best tool or tools to for holding the centre damper rod while undoing the nut. Perhaps with a link to known and recommended item/s of the correct size?
