cruise control prob

just had a cruise fitted gen vw one and its hit and miss when it works
when i press the set button to activate only kicks in 30% of the time
asking anyone else done when when costing in gear no throttle 50 mph does it kick in as on my 2004 mondeo tdci press it and instant set
only 60% of time hard accelerate it may work.
