ENGINE NUMBER

Assuming I can find it, does the ENGINE SERIAL NUMBER give me any indication of the date of manufacture of the engine, as opposed to the car?
Issue is that I have an engine from a 2003 car transplanted into my 2005 after I trashed the original one in deep floodwater. I know the VIN for the donor car which is how I know the assumed age of the engine I now have but if I can prove its actual age to a French bureaucrat in some way I can save myself a couple of thousand euros as 2004 was a critical year for tax changes here on motor vehicles.
Any advice most welcome.
