Playing video file on discover pro?

Is there som magin=c involved in this?
I have tried several times with avi files and other types on usb stick and also on sd card but to no avail.
I keep getting message something like "File Error"
Is there only a particular file type that will work?
Or is it solely from DVD?
As I understood the reading it plays several file types.
