Hi All
I'm starting to have a little think about a newer car. and would welcome your opinions.
I currently have a 98 B5 110 AFN Saloon (owned since 03), and a 52 B5.5 130 AVF Estate (owned since 14), and have been amazed and impressed with the combination of reliability (apart from the infamous outer CV boots, track rod ends and upper pinch bolt), economy - like a recent 700 mile drive to east Germany in the B5 at a constant 85mph and returning 55MPG (calculated by fuel uplift/miles and not the computer which was showing 60-65MPG), and the ability to carry out all maintenance myself (including cam belt, flywheel, brakes etc) without the need for special tools and super computers,
I have noticed that the B5 still appears to be fairing better on some bits, like fasteners are a lot rustier on the B5.5 even though the cars have always been in the same environment.
I've read before others mentioning the perceived quality was less on newer/later models, maybe built in obsolescence? Would you agree with this or is this just a little paranoia?
So with that in mind what are the latest opinions of the post B5.5 Passats? All I think of when I see a B6 is rear callipers, key modules, 2.0 engine issues. Is this fair, were these only issues on early/certain cars.
I love the exterior look of the CC but know it shares all the common parts of the B6 and presumably its issues.
I know nothing of the B7.
I a slightly different note what a bout the Phaeton? seems a bargain for what you get, but probably not the most diy maintenance friendly, or many in scrapyards.
Thanks
