OBDII scanner (ELM327)

Folks,

My AFS headlights in my 2011 Passat went south on me last week so they no longer follow bends or do their little dance on startup so I bought a bluetooth OBDII scanner thinking I could get the fault codes from VCDS-lite or Scanmaster.

Doesn't work though, despite me forcing the COM port to be COM2 instead of something ridiculous like COM7 nothing will connect. Any recommendations for a cabled OBDII scanner? Preferably RS232 (9 pin) but USB should be OK also. Reading the descriptions of the ebay scanners they seem to top out at 2010 cars so I wonder if mine has a newer protocol that the 1.4 ELM327 chip doesn't support....

Cheers!
