Noisy parking brake

I stole this comment from another post.
When the brakes are applied on my B6 Estate the motors are quite clearly heard inside the car with doors closed and engine running. A few people have commented and asked what the noise was coming from the car.
Should I get these checked out and is there a maintenance step before replacement?
