DSG Box, Can it be Checked before Fitting?

Hi Guys,
I have managed to get hold of another 6 Speed DSG gearbox, however is their any way it can be checked to see if it is ok before fitting?
Located in Manchester so dont mind paying someone to do it if possible?
Also after fitting, is any type of programming needed or will it all work straightaway?
