Violent steering wheel shake under braking!,,

Hi all,
I have suddenly developed a violent shake through the steering wheel and car when braking with medium pressure from about 70mph but does not seem to happen if doing around 50mph. I have new discs and pads fitted by the garage about 13k ago, and when I last had it in the air I could not feel any wiggle either 9-3 or 12-6 on the front wheels.
There is a quite loud rattle noise at the same time and if I rock the steering wheel when stationary there is a definite clunking noise.
Apart from the above how can I check for tie rod or other worn parts?
I am about due some new front tyres, could it be them?
They seem to have worn even so guessing alignment is good?
All advice and help greatly appreciated.
