B6 steering rack clunk solutions? Advice?

Hi,

I have a 2007 57 plate passat which has developed a slight clunk from the front. A quick look hints at the steering rack, when stationary if I rock my steering wheel lift to right no matter what direction the front wheels are pointing I get a clunk, both physical and audible. This is felt through the steering wheel. Having someone do this whilst I feel around underneath the only thing I could feel it through was the where the rack is exposed on both sides of the car.

Could this be mounting bolts? If so where can I find them and what size etc are they so I can ensure having correct tools ready before starting.

If it us a new rack is it something I can easily do myself as money is an issue.

I need to have a good look underneath when I can get it up in the air, but if doing that I might as well have the tools to hand to check a few things.

The car has only done 134,300 miles, and I have only had it 20 months. Was going to do an oil change next week but if this needs attention I may have to give it to the garage to sort.

Thanks in advance for all comments and advice

Scott
