Air con ineffective

Just did a long journey in my two year old Mk7 2.0Tdi SE and with the arrival of summer I was very disappointed with the aircon and how it never got really cold. Have done a run now in wife's Volvo and the difference in effectiveness was most startling. Could it need recharging so soon?
