Steam Cleaner

Does a steamer to clean the engine bay and interior need to be of a certain spec?
I only ask as I am considering purchasing one for the engine and interior. BUT (isn't there always one) I will need to purchase it under the guise of getting it for the wife to clean around the bathroom etc..
I have seen some cheap ones at Argos and such in the sub £80 area, would they suffice or would I need a heavy duty Karcher or something?
