1989 passat cl Tdi??? Surely not original engine

Red Passat on eBay cl estate 1989, 1.9td but the engine says tdi on the top?? I thought the tdi only appeared in the B4.
Seller states its the original lump but I think it's had a conversion, what are your thoughts???
