Clunking from front end - help needed!

Today a new problem arose... 
When the car is rocked, ie when i brake at slow speed, - a distinct clunk/knock is heard from (i think) the front drivers (uk) side.
This has only just started today and is very noticeable.
The car is a 2001 1.8t.
Ive just freewheeled down a hill here very slowly (5mph), i pressed the brake pedal every 2-3 seconds and the noise is there 90% of the time...
What would be the most common problem, or where should i start?
