Rear boot lock problem

Hi all,
Had my TDi estate for a few days now but its got a problem with the boot closing.
I have to shut it several times before the lock catches and usually slamming it shut doesn't do it either.
It unlocks just fine but I've noticed that when I open the boot the car doors lock again after a short period (as they're supposed to when not opening a door) even though the boot is still open.
So could there be a problem with the latch or the switch in the latch? The wife did say she hears the lock making a noise when the hatch is closed but doesn't actually stay latched.
Appreciate any help.
