Hill starts...am I a retard?

Now most of you know im new to this B6 ownership lark and more so the fiddly handbrake.
I have a question and bit of a problem I need solving.
I was on a steep hill today when I realised I couldnt do my usual hill start because of the button thing...is there something I should know about pulling away on a hill that I should know...surely VW wouldnt have made it this retarded.
